5 Very Common Questions Clients Ask Massage Therapists

Updated: Feb 7, 2023

Massage can be intimidating and confusing if you're new to bodywork. So, it's not a surprise when I get questions from prospective clients about what to expect during a massage. You should feel comfortable and informed with your practitioner and asking the right questions can help give you that peace of mind.

  1. Do I have to get undressed or be naked to get a massage? No, receiving a massage is centered around what makes you feel comfortable. A professional massage therapist should be able to provide effective treatment regardless.

  2. Can I limit what areas I get massaged? Yes, again it's all about you feeling comfortable. You're in control of what areas are off limits, how you dress and the pressure the therapist uses during your treatment.

  3. Should I shower before a massage? Yes, if you just finished a workout, your therapist will likely appreciate massaging a sweat-and odor-free body.

  4. Should my body hurt the day after a massage? Similar to a good workout, you may experience some muscle soreness. If you feel bruised or sore for multiple days after your massage, the massage was too deep. So, remember to speak up and communicate with your therapist when the pressure is painful so they can adjust.

  5. What's the fuss about massages and drinking water? If you drink before your massage session, you may have to urinate during your session. However, it's recommended to drink water after your session because it can help with reducing muscle soreness and flushing out toxins.
